While small enough to be carried aboard capital ships as a starfighter, its immense power output (produced by a Sarylcorp ViX multi-flux reactor), weaponry, and shielding caused some registries to designate it as a capital ship. It wasn't until 15 ABY with their transfer to the HIMS Inquisitor by request of Liuetenant Commander Inrokana that they were actually seen in service with a major Task Force. The Sienar Fleet Systems GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat was, early in the Galactic Civil War, the smallest hyperspace-capable combat starship in use by the Imperial Navy. It is not uncommon to see this squadron, and others like it, deployed after large battles in an attempt to pick off stragglers too damaged to keep up with the recovering fleets.

The four Skipray Blastboats of this squadron operate as a hunter-killer pack, often deployed from a base and roving as far as three adjacent systems away in search of lightly escorted convoys or lone, unsuspecting warships to strike. Skipray Squadron 432, also known as the Widowmakers, was given the battlefield designator of Omega in its sector of operation.

The aft-mounted dorsal fin rotates 90 degrees to lay flat for landing and is also rotated flat for atmospheric flight.Omega Squadron is a Skipray Blastboat squadron assigned to Task Force Inquisitor. It is capable of 360 degree rotation allowing maximum flexibility for any given situation. The craft boasts a unique variable operation mode regarding the aft dorsal fin. This explains its continued use in outer-rim planetary patrol fleets, as well as smugglers reliance on the durable craft. The most popular variant, the GAT-12h has proven to be an exceptionally reliable ship. The ship began to sell on the open market and as the Skipray Blastboat gained fame and reputation it became a staple of corporate, security, pirate and smuggler fleets.

It is small enough to be carried aboard capital ships as a starfighter, but is generally considered a hyperspace capable heavy gunboat. The GAT-12h Skipray Blastboat is a fascinating amalgamation of fighter and gunship.
